Women In Afghanistan
As we watch the events unfold in Afghanistan, our heart goes out to our sisters there.
The women of Afghanistan are in a vulnerable situation, as the hard won rights of recent years are in jeopardy. Women can expect to have very little to no freedom, especially in terms of civil liberties and the disappearance of women from the public realm is already happening.
We at Goddess Living are passionate about EVERY-woman having a powerful voice and we all feel it when one group loses theirs.
The challenges these women face are unimaginable and I know many of us would love to do something if we could.
You CAN help support the women and girls of Afghanistan. Not only those there, but the Afghan women and girls who are being displaced as well.
Should you be moved to do so, we have found the following organizations that already have a presence in Afghanistan and are known to us as organizations that operate with a high degree of effectiveness.

The following organizations provide ways to help.
Women for Women Intl – from their website
“Over the past few decades, we’ve reached more than 120 000 women in #Afghanistan and we hope to increase services for those who are displaced and those who need us most now.
We’re closely monitoring the situation unfolding. Our team is safe. They are very sad, but calm, and sheltering in place. We are so proud of them and the work they do serving #afghanistanwomen and their families across the country.”
Georgetown Institute for Women, Peace and Security
The Institute is also spreading the word about how to donate. Here’s what they have to say on their website…
“It is a perilous moment for Afghan women and girls. Every day, the Taliban is gaining ground, assassinating women leaders, attacking girls at school, and rolling back women’s rights in the process. We are running out of time to prevent the worst from happening.”
The International Committee of the Red Cross:
The ICRC is responding to the Afghanistan war by helping wounded and disabled people, supporting hospitals, making prison visits and helping detainees maintain contact with their families, monitoring the conduct of hostilities and preventing IHL violations, improving water and sanitation, promoting IHL and supporting the Afghan Red Crescent.
Shamsia Hassani, Afghani graffiti artist. Her artworks have inspired thousands of women around the world and has given new hope to female Afghan artists in the country. She has motivated hundreds of Afghans to bring in their creativity through her graffiti festival, art classes, and exhibitions in different countries around the world. You can buy her art here!
Staying Informed!
Want to learn more and stay informed? The Guardian Global Dispatch is doing a great job of getting the word out about how it really is there.
For instance, from the Guardian Global Dispatch newsletter:
“We began a partnership with Rukhshana Media, a collective of female Afghan journalists led by Zahra Joya – a tenacious reporter who had to disguise herself as a boy to get an education as a child. Rukhshana reporters sent us a raft of story ideas from across the country; many about the terrible situation facing women and girls as the Taliban advance, but others on street style in Kabul, or Afghans doing incredible things such as pursuing astrophysics or scaling mountains.”
By clicking the Rukhshana Media link above, you will be taken to stories, straight from the mouths of Afghani women. There is an option to read it in English.
