Recently, we ran across a fabulous TEDx Talk that we want to highlight. We always like to share women standing up for women and it is particularly fun when that woman is a Nun!
Meet Sister Joan Chittister, she is one of the most influential religious and social leaders of our time. For over 50 years she has passionately advocated on behalf of peace, human rights, women’s issues, and monastic and church renewal. A much sought-after international speaker, she is also a best-selling author of more than 60 books.
Don’t know if you have noticed but Feminism has gotten a crummy reputation. There are many reasons for this and it is a bigger topic than we are going to attempt to tackle in a weekly newsletter. However, we are going to say that what most people think of when they hear the word is NOT what it’s all about.
Feminism is simply the advocacy of women's rights on the basis of the equality of the sexes, according to the New Oxford American Dictionary.
What we LOVE about Joan’s talk is she sheds light and insight on how religion, feminism, science and creationism can all co-exist … that is shocking for almost ANYONE who argues for any one of those things!
While so many get deep nourishment from religion and spirituality, it can be an awkward place to be a feminist or simply a believer in the equality of women. Joan helps us see past these historical limits.
When we think about the many facets of religion, feminism or science, we immediately see conflicting aspects. But, what if all there is to do is look for the common ground or modernize our views.
According to Joan, modern society has been running with only one eye, one ear and one half a brain. It is time to integrate both sexes into society fully. We couldn’t agree more!!
