Celebrating Black History

Reading Time: minutes

We thought we would use the backdrop of Black History Month to examine identity and inclusivity … how do we create an integrated society where all people are treated with equal value and respect.

Like all things we wish to change, we must start with the current condition, in other words, how it is right now. It’s kind of like the mall. To get where you are going, you have to start at the you are here’ dot on the map. Then you can see the route to your destination.

This issue of the Goddess Inquirer is dedicated to the roles black women have played in american history. This provides us a mall map to better understand the current experience for people of color in American society.

By looking at how we got here, we can see here with more clarity.

We encourage you to read, watch and listen to some, or all, of the following resources. Have your heart and mind open to the accomplishments, strengths and commitments of these amazing people and their stories.

Then remember, you are one of those amazing people too!!

35 Queens of Black History Who Deserve Much More Glory

Last Friday, we started the February inquiries with the Goddess Talk. We educated ourselves about some of the lesser known women of color who deeply impacted the world we live in today. While it is clear there is a fair distance to go to reach our vision of a respectful and inclusive society, looking at history, we can also see how far we have come.

This Month's Book

White People Really Love Salad:

What My Childhood Taught Me About Diversity, Equity & Inclusion

BY NITA MOSBY TYLER, PH.D.

'As funny as the story is now, it was a great example of how not understanding cultural norms can lead to stereotypes and generalizations. Even the most obscure things (like salad as an entrée) can kick-start next steps that might be unnecessary and ill-informed.'

We invite you to read Nita's book. Join us for Goddess Talk on Friday, February 26th, 2p-3:15p (Central Time) to discuss the book.
